Fit and Healthy Dad Given Months to Live After ‘Stomach Pain’ Leads to Devastating Diagnosis
A ‘fit and healthy’ Glasgow dad, Stewart Phimister, 40, has been given just months to live after experiencing persistent stomach discomfort and pain in his right side.
Diagnosis and Medical Journey
Stewart, from Cardonald, visited his GP last year with complaints of dull pain and stomach issues that didn’t feel right. Despite requesting a scan, he was prescribed medication and underwent blood tests and physiotherapy as part of standard procedures.
On January 11 of this year, Stewart once again pushed for a scan but was told it could take six to eight weeks and might be denied. The following day, after experiencing severe pain, he visited an out-of-hours practice where an ultrasound was ordered, initially suspected to be gallstones.
However, on Thursday of last week, Stewart received devastating news in the presence of his partner Alannah, 27, and his mother—he has incurable cancer.
A Heartbreaking Diagnosis
Speaking to Glasgow Live, Alannah described the moment: “It felt like a nightmare we couldn’t wake up from. Stewart had been in pain for months, but because of his age, they followed their procedures and delayed the scan. It wasn’t until he visited out-of-hours on Saturday that things progressed.”
On Monday, Stewart underwent an ultrasound, and by Wednesday, doctors identified lesions on his liver and a mass behind his pancreas, prompting further investigations. Surgeons informed the family that Stewart’s cancer was incurable as it had spread extensively, leaving only palliative chemotherapy as an option.
“Stewart asked how long he had left, and the consultant said between three to six months,” Alannah said.
Impact on the Family
Doctors believe Stewart has primary liver cancer that has spread to his left kidney, a rare occurrence for someone his age. “They said cases like his usually affect people over 65,” Alannah added.
The family now faces the challenge of explaining the situation to their nearly three-year-old daughter, Darcie. “Stewart wants to find a way to tell her that when dad’s not here, he’ll be in the sky. It’s heartbreaking,” Alannah shared.
Fundraiser for Memories
In response, Stewart’s best friend, John Beattie, launched a fundraiser to help the family create lasting memories. The fundraiser, which has already raised nearly £9,000, aims to alleviate financial stress and allow Stewart to spend quality time with Alannah and Darcie.
The fundraiser message reads: “At just 40 years old, Stewart has had to stop working and now wants to make the most of his remaining time with his family. He has always been the friend who supported others in their time of need, and now it’s our turn to support him.”
Alannah expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from friends and family: “Stewart is only 40, and there’s still so much he wants to do. We appreciate all the help we’ve received.”
Stewart’s story is a poignant reminder of the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones. The community’s support has been instrumental in helping the family through this challenging time.
