Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs Outlast Bills to Reach Super Bowl 59 with Historic Three-Peat Opportunity
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs continue their dominance in the NFL.
The reigning back-to-back Super Bowl champions edged out the Buffalo Bills 32-29 in a thrilling contest to advance to their third consecutive Super Bowl appearance. This marks the franchise’s fifth AFC championship win since 2019 and extends their impressive streak to nine straight postseason victories.
With their sights set on history, the Chiefs are aiming to become the first team ever to win three consecutive Super Bowl titles.
Mahomes delivered another stellar performance, amassing 245 passing yards, one touchdown, 43 rushing yards, and two rushing scores.
The Chiefs offense opened the game with a commanding nine-play, 90-yard touchdown drive to take an early 7-0 lead. However, a Mahomes fumble on the next possession allowed Josh Allen and the Bills to respond with 10 unanswered points. Undeterred, Mahomes led back-to-back scoring drives in the second quarter, securing a 21-16 halftime advantage.
Buffalo regained the lead in the third quarter with a methodical 80-yard touchdown drive, dominated by 11 rushing plays, putting them ahead 22-21. However, early in the fourth quarter, the Chiefs defense made a critical stop on an Allen fourth-and-inches sneak attempt.
Mahomes capitalized on the turnover, leading a five-play scoring drive capped by his own 10-yard rushing touchdown, followed by a successful two-point conversion to give Kansas City a 29-22 lead.
Allen and the Bills fought back, orchestrating a late drive that culminated in a four-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-goal to tie the game at 29-29.
Kansas City’s offense responded with a drive that stalled in the red zone, but kicker Harrison Butker delivered a clutch 35-yard field goal, giving the Chiefs a 32-29 lead.
Buffalo had a final opportunity to tie the game, but Kansas City’s aggressive defense blitzed Allen on fourth down, forcing an incomplete pass and sealing the victory.
With this win, Mahomes improved to 4-0 against Allen and the Bills in postseason matchups.
Since 2018, Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid have led the Chiefs to seven consecutive AFC Championship Games and five Super Bowl appearances. Mahomes now boasts 17 career postseason victories, the second-most in NFL history.
The Chiefs, who clinched their ninth consecutive AFC West title this season, will now head to New Orleans for Super Bowl 59. They join an elite group as the fourth team to reach three consecutive Super Bowls.
This will mark Andy Reid’s sixth Super Bowl appearance as a head coach, and the Chiefs will face the Philadelphia Eagles—Reid’s former team—in a rematch of Super Bowl 57, which the Chiefs won 38-35.
