The Jellyfish Haircut Was the Real Winner at the Grammys This Year

If there’s one awards show I eagerly await every year, it’s the Grammys—and this year’s ceremony did not disappoint. From eye-catching red carpet looks to the exhilarating moment Beyoncé won Album of the Year, the 67th annual show was definitely memorable. Let me introduce you to the jellyfish haircut.

Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, and Lady Gaga all rocked this bold cut at the Grammys, each putting their own spin on it. Cyrus added chunky highlights to her soft brown hair, Gaga opted for a dramatic micro fringe (another trend stirring up some debate), and Eilish kept things sleek and simple with her jet-black locks tied up. But what tied their looks together? The iconic length difference that defines the jellyfish haircut.

Inspired by the traditional Japanese hime cut, the jellyfish haircut blends the bluntness of a bob with the wildness of a mullet. As hairstylist Juli Akaneya explained, the cut features short, blunt hair on top (resembling a bob) while the hair beneath is left long and textured. This contrast mimics the shape of a jellyfish—hence the name.

Akaneya continued, “It’s similar to a mullet or shag in that the hair on top is much shorter (representing the body of the jellyfish), while the hair below is longer, but the sections are more drastic and disconnected (mimicking the tentacles).”

Yet, despite its daring nature, the trio of stars managed to pull it off effortlessly. If I had to choose a favorite, I’d say Cyrus’s fuller bangs make it feel more approachable, a testament to the genius of her stylist Bob Recine.

While Akaneya assured me the jellyfish haircut works for all hair types and face shapes, I’ll leave it up to these Grammy-winning artists to continue rocking this daring trend.
