UWB Galaxy Buds by Samsung might change wireless audio forever
Seems like Samsung wants to develop Bluetooth-free Galaxy Buds with UWB tech. The majority of hearable devices rely on Bluetooth for connectivity. Samsung is exploring ways to replace Bluetooth with UWB on future Galaxy Buds.
Recently, 91mobiles spotted a patent for wirelessly transmitting audio between a device and wireless earphones via UWB. It indicates that Samsung is investigating Ultra Wide-Band (UWB) for wireless earphones, and Galaxy Buds.
Interestingly, Bluetooth will still be configured on the device to initially establish a connection between the host device and the first earphone. Once done, it will be switched to the UWB connection followed by the second earphone.
Bluetooth earbuds offer an immersive audio experience, but Samsung has a different plan. The company believes that UWB audio transmission could offer reduced interference and latency compared to Bluetooth.
The patent also shows that Samsung thinks using UWB will enable high-speed data transmission (up to 20Mbps) and reduce power consumption. Such data transmission speed would enable the delivery of lossless audio.
Pairing a UWB-powered hearable will require the host device to feature the technology. Samsung’s flagships sport the hardware, but not all models. The vanilla Galaxy S25 lacks the UWB component, which is present in the Plus and Ultra.
The innovative idea is currently limited to patent filings. There are numerous patents are available with approval from authorities that never commercialized. It’s up to Samsung when to utilize the technology and release a consumer product.
